Shasta, now Kira
Kira (formerly Shasta) has settled into her forever home with maturity and grace. The first few days were a series of experiences as she adjusted to city life in a new home.. She cautiously smelled everything in the house and yard, familiarizing herself to her new surroundings.
Resting on the rear deck, her ears would perk when she heard children playing or other dogs barking in the neighborhood. When we went for the first walk around the block, her tail was wagging as she strolled down the sidewalk, seeing and sniffing the path that would soon become familiar to her. In the short time she's been here, she now gets three walks around the block a day and will let me know it's time for a walk by standing in front of the fence gate. I hope to gradually increase the distance of our walks over the coming weeks. In the house she needs to be in whatever room I'm in and follows me around. I've placed dog beds in all of the rooms where I spend my time so she always has a comfortable place to lay down. Not surprisingly, she enjoys hanging out in the kitchen, which is where the treats are kept. She doesn't demand attention and is content to just be wherever I am.
This gentle girl loves to be petted and has a knack for making presence known to people by sitting in front of them until she receives a few good pets. It's amazing to watch her work a crowd of people as she goes from person to person, getting a little bit of attention from everyone. She has enjoyed her time at the farmers market or the dog park where there's always someone new to meet. At the dog park, she prefers the company of the smaller or older dogs and she doesn't have a lot of time for the rambunctious ones.
She's also quite happy to take her time and explore the place on her own. When she gets tired, we have a seat at a bench and she gets pets. Or she just goes up to someone already sitting and introduces herself. With her sweet demeanor, I would like her to socialize with other people and animals as much as we can. While she responds to commands and knows her sit and stay, I think we could both use a refresher course and we'll be enrolling in an obedience class soon. I'm sure it will also help strengthen the bond between us which is growing stronger every day. Kira is an awesome golden retriever and I'm so happy to have her in my life. Thanks for connecting us, GRROW!
